Things you should know about this product!

  • This product is sold by the board
  • This product is available in the following thicknesses: 50mm and 100mm

Description

Polyfoam Upstand Board is a high-performance insulation solution, consisting of rigid extruded polystyrene (XPS) bonded to a durable, weather-resistant facing board. This laminate construction combines the excellent thermal insulation and compressive strength of Polyfoam XPS with a robust outer surface, providing enhanced durability and protection against weathering.

The board is suitable for use in roof upstands, parapets, and other exposed building edges, ensuring reliable long-term performance and ease of installation in both domestic and commercial applications.

Where to use

PolyFoam XPS Polyfoam Upstand Board is best suited for use in roofing and insulated building applications where vertical or angled insulation is required. It is ideal for forming upstands, perimeters, and edge details in flat roof constructions, providing excellent thermal insulation and maintaining dimensional stability under load. Its closed-cell extruded polystyrene construction ensures high compressive strength, moisture resistance, and long-term durability, making it compatible with inverted roofs, green roofs, and roofs below ballast or paving slabs. PolyFoam Upstand Board is particularly effective in detailing critical roof junctions, helping to prevent thermal bridging and supporting the overall efficiency and longevity of the insulation system.

Frequently asked questions

Installation & Fixing Guidance

  • Use a TCT saw (tungsten carbide tipped) to cut boards; PPE (e.g. face masks) for dust control
  • Boards should be mechanically fixed to the wall—through fixings penetrating the upstand—especially in taller upstands or where the roof deck does not restrain the bottom of the board. Fixing centres often range between 50 mm from the top edge to a maximum spacing of ~200 mm.
  • It is advisable to use fixings such as Ejot DDS or equivalent approved fixings, ensuring penetration into the wall substrate (e.g. ≥ 25 mm embedment)
  • Where the upstand board exceeds certain height ratios or is not adequately restrained, additional fixings or adhesive may be required to prevent movement.
  • Protect edges and corners of the facing layer during handling to prevent chipping

What is its purpose / where is it used?

It is used to thermally insulate and protect vertical upstands and parapet walls in flat roofs—both in inverted and conventional roof assemblies

Limitations & Considerations

  • The XPS core is combustible (Euroclass F), so fire safety detailing must ensure that the facing or adjacent materials mitigate fire risk.
  • The board should not be left exposed to strong UV / prolonged sunlight—the facing helps protect it, but over time exposure may degrade surfaces.
  • Edges and joints should be carefully designed and sealed to avoid air or moisture leakage paths
  • The temperature limit of +70 °C means it may not be suitable in extreme heat exposures
  • Because the facing board has a higher conductivity, its portion in the overall R‑value is relatively minor, but must be included in thermal calculations
