Description

Polyfoam Floorboard Extra is a rigid extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation board designed to deliver reliable thermal performance and exceptional compressive strength. With a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than 5 and Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), it provides a sustainable and durable solution for insulation applications.

This square-edged XPS board achieves a compressive strength of 300 kPa, making it ideal for use in floors subject to moderate to high loads where long-term performance and dimensional stability are essential.

Key Features

  • High compressive strength – protects the damp proof membrane from damage
  • - Highly resistant to water absorption
  • - Robust and can tolerate traffic from following trades

Where to use

Polyfoam Floorboard Extra is best suited for use in flooring applications that require high compressive strength, moisture resistance, and long-term thermal performance. It is ideal for installation below a concrete slab, providing effective thermal insulation that reduces heat loss to the ground while maintaining structural integrity under load. When used below a screed, it offers a stable and robust base that enhances the overall efficiency and durability of the floor system. In applications below chipboard, Polyfoam Floorboard Extra delivers consistent insulation and dimensional stability, preventing movement and maintaining a level surface. Its closed-cell XPS construction ensures excellent resistance to water absorption, making it a reliable choice for a wide range of insulated floor build-ups in both residential and commercial environments.

Frequently asked questions

How should it be installed / what are the key installation considerations?

  • Ensure the substrate is clean, level, and appropriate for the insulation board.
  • Lay boards with tight butting of edges; avoid gaps that may compromise thermal performance.
  • If stacking boards (multiple layers), stagger joints to reduce alignment of joints and thermal bridging.
  • Protect the boards during installation from damage, heavy point loads, and prolonged exposure to water or moisture.
  • For floors above slab, ensure compatibility with screed, underfloor heating, or other floor finishes as appropriate.
  • Refer to the manufacturer’s installation guide (e.g., Polyfoam’s “Product & Application Guide – XPS”) for full details.

What limitations or cautions should be noted?

  • Although moisture performance is strong, correct detailing (edge insulation, junctions, damp proof courses) is still vital to overall building performance.
  • Fire performance: as an XPS board, fire rating will depend on surrounding materials and detailing; designers must ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Care in handling: boards must be cut properly (recommended tools e.g., TCT saw) and should not be left exposed to direct UV for extended periods. (As general for XPS products)
  • Thickness and build-up: ensure that the board thickness is appropriate for the U-value required, and appropriate load/traffic considerations are addressed.

Why choose Floorboard Extra over standard board?

If your project demands higher compressive load resistance (e.g., heavy traffic, thicker screeds, industrial floors), greater durability in challenging conditions (below slab, frequent loads), or if you want better future-proofing, then the Extra grade gives improved mechanical performance while retaining the excellent thermal/moisture features of XPS insulation.
